Derby County have completed the signing of Brighton defender Matt Clarke on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old becomes Derby's third signing of the summer and could make his debut for the Rams against Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on Monday evening.

The centre-back joined Brighton from Portsmouth this summer, but Graham Potter has decided to send him out on loan this season to allow him to gain more experience.

Clarke was a key player for Portsmouth last season and scored four goals in 60 appearances in all competitions, as Pompey reached the League One play-offs and lifted the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley.

The defender then moved to Brighton earlier this summer, signing a four-year deal at the Amex Stadium for an undisclosed fee.

Derby reached the Championship play-off final under Frank Lampard last season and will be hoping to challenge for promotion again this term under new manager Phillip Cocu.

The Rams will begin their new campaign against Huddersfield on Monday night and will be hoping to start the campaign with three points.

The Verdict

I think this is a very good signing for Derby.

Clarke is a very good defender and has been a key player for Portsmouth over the past few seasons.

His committed performances on the pitch saw him become a fan favourite at Fratton Park and he also impressed for Brighton during pre-season.

He's obviously got a lot of potential, but he probably would have been used as cover for Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk at Brighton this season, so sending him out on loan is probably the best option for his development.

He could really benefit from a season in the Championship and I'm expecting him to play an important role for Derby this season.
