Derby County missed out on the chance to sign winger Mo Barrow from fellow Championship side Reading, GetReading have reported.

There has been speculation about Barrow's future across the course of the summer, with the winger reportedly keen to leave the Madejski Stadium.

According to the latest reports, Derby had been interested in offering Barrow a way out of Reading after entering into talks with the Royals about signing the 26-year-old earlier this week, but failed to meet the club's asking price, which was previously said to be around £1million.

The Rams did eventually add to their attacking options on deadline day, after signing winger Jamie Paterson from another of their Championship rivals, Bristol City, on a season-long loan deal.

It now looks as though Derby will miss out on the chance to sign Barrow altogether, as three clubs from abroad also thought to be interested in Barrow, with the transfer window in most other European countries not set to close until later this month.

Since joining Reading from Swansea City in the summer of 2017, Barrow has made 83 appearances and scored 14 goals in all competitions for the Royals.

The Verdict

This will be a frustrating situation for Derby.

Barrow has shown he is a quality player throughout his time at Reading, and he would have been a useful addition to a Derby side who were evidently keen to add to their attacking options.

With interest from abroad growing, it seems not only as though Reading are going to lose a player without getting the chance to sign a replacement, but Derby are also going to miss out on a possible, useful new signing.

This therefore, is one of those situations that makes you wonder why clubs in the Premier League and Championship have decided to close their window so much earlier than those on the rest of the continent.
