Derby County could face competition for Sam Cosgrove in January, according to reports from the Scottish Sun.

The Rams have been linked with a move for the Aberdeen frontman after proving himself as one of the top goalscoring talents in the Scottish Premiership.

Unfortunately it seems that they will face a struggle to sign the frontman.

It's claimed that Newcastle United are now plotting a move for the Dons' attacker.

Cosgrove has scored more than 20 goals in both of the last two seasons and it's that attacking instinct which could be convincing Steve Bruce's side to make a move.

Given Derby's position in the Championship they may face an uphill battle to convince him to join the club - especially if sides in the Premier League are now sniffing around.

Quiz: Did these 17 Derby County players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Asked if he could attract a big-money move earlier this season, Cosgrove said: “I would like to think so.

“I think I was unlucky with the timing of my injury.

“All I can do now is try to replicate the form I had last season.

“If I keep scoring goals and the team are performing then I don’t see why the interest can’t be generated and why it can’t happen.”

The Verdict

There's no doubt that Sam Cosgrove will attract a big-money move sooner rather than later.

While injuries have slowed him down this term, he's already shown exactly what he can offer and that's why so many clubs are clamouring to sign him.

With Newcastle United now entering the race it will make things difficult for Derby, but the Rams will still be hoping to get a deal done if they can.
