Despite boasting the likes of Tom Ince, Darren Bent and Will Hughes last season, Derby County were extremely goal shy, and could only muster a poor 54 goals in their 46 league outings.

The sides directly above and below them, Norwich and Brentford, registered 85 and 75 goals in their campaigns, which will give Rams boss Gary Rowett cause for concern heading into the summer transfer window.

Rowett will want to improve on this distinctly average record in order to fire his side to the play-offs, and will look to add goals to his squad this summer in the forward positions.

Losing Tom Ince to Huddersfield will be a huge blow to the former Birmingham manager, and Ince’s prowess will need to be replaced.

However, Rowett may find goals added to his squad without spending a penny, with prolific striker Chris Martin returning to the club following a loan spell in London with Fulham.

Martin has been Derby’s most consistent scorer since joining the club in 2013, and has 52 goals in only 121 appearances for the East Midlands giants.

10 goals for Fulham last season will have been a disappointment to the player, who will return to Pride Park this summer eager to rack up the goals next year in familiar surroundings.

Martin is 28-years-old and at the peak of his powers, and the Scottish international has the ability to hit 20 plus goals in the division next year.

Derby lacked a prolific scorer last season, and this limited their goalscoring output.

Martin’s return could be the best thing that happens to the Rams this summer, and having significantly bolstered their back line with the addition of Curtis Davies and Andre Wisdom, Rowett is quickly moulding the Rams into play-off contenders.
