Derby have completed the signing of Ashley Cole, with the left-back signing a deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the season.

The 38-year-old is widely regarded as England's best ever player in his position and he has won over 100 caps for his country.

Cole is close friends with Rams boss Frank Lampard, with the pair enjoying great success at Chelsea over the years, which included winning the Champions League.

And, the club confirmed on their website this evening that the experienced defender has agreed to join the club to help their promotion push.

Bringing in a left-back had been a priority for Lampard after he lost George Forsyth to injury and decided to send Max Lowe back out on loan.

Therefore, Cole will provide competition with Scott Malone for that role, whilst his winning mentality will benefit the group as they look to return to the Premier League.

The ex-Arsenal man was a free agent having left MLS side LA Galaxy where he had been for the past few years.

Cole could make his Rams debut in the FA Cup this weekend as they travel to take on Accrington Stanley.

The Verdict

This deal makes a lot of sense for Derby, and Cole should be able to bring something to the club both on and off the pitch.

Firstly, they clearly need a left-back and he is a solid option that Lampard knows he can trust.

Then, he will surely give the players a lift and be a positive influence in the dressing room as they will be working with someone who was genuinely world-class in his prime.
