Derby County’s official website have confirmed some disappointing news, with Bradley Johnson set to miss the East Midland derby with Nottingham Forest after the international break.

Johnson picked up his fifth caution of the season against Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon, meaning he will now serve a one-match suspension, which will take place after this week’s international football.

The influential midfielder will now miss Forest’s visit to the Pride Park Stadium, leaving Gary Rowett short of options in central midfield for the visit of the Rams’ bitter rivals.

Johnson has formed an excellent partnership with Tom Huddlestone and Joe Ledley in recent weeks, with the midfielder handed a licence to get forward, with his teammates providing defensive cover.

The 30-year-old has so far featured in all 10 of Derby’s Championship fixtures, scoring three goals and establishing himself as a key member of Rowett’s starting XI.

Derby head into the international break in 15th place, having endured a difficult start to the Sky Bet Championship season that has seen them manage to pick up just 13 points from a possible 30.

The Verdict

Johnson has been impressive for Derby so far this season, and his absence from the clash with Forest is undoubtedly a blow for the Rams and Rowett, particularly with midfield options limited.

Derby’s start to the season has been slow, but victory over Forest in the next Championship fixture could prove to be something that ignites the Rams’ season and quest for the top-six.

As with all East Midland derby games, more is at stake than just three points, but that will be all Rowett is thinking about.
