Derby are set to announce the signing of veteran defender, Ashley Cole on a short term contract, according to the Derby Telegraph.

Cole has been a free agent since his contract expired with LA Galaxy, and is set to link up with former team-mate, Frank Lampard with the promotion chasing side.

The Rams are currently sat sixth in the Championship table, and are just seven points adrift of the automatic promotion places which will be pleasing to see for Derby supporters.

There will certainly be questions asked about whether the 38-year-old can cut it at Championship level, as he surely isn't likely to be the player he once was.

Cole has 107 caps to his name for England, and he could be a good addition to Frank Lampard's squad this season as they challenge for promotion.

The left-back has three Premier League titles to his name, and could play his part both on and off the pitch, as he could aid the development of younger players in the Derby squad.

Derby boss, Frank Lampard has already admitted that talks have taken place between Cole and the club, as he looks to add depth to his defensive options.

"I have spoken to Ashley and I think he can come in and compete in an area where we know we are slightly short defensively," said Lampard in a recent interview.

So with a deal likely to be completed in the coming days, Cole could potentially be in line to make his debut for the Rams when they take on Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup this weekend.

The Verdict:

This is a smart bit of business for Derby.

Derby are in need of some experience in a relatively young squad, and Cole would certainly be a useful addition to rely upon both on and off the pitch.

He could be exactly what they need to retain their place in the top six.
