Derby County close to landing impressive 5ft 10in attacker

Derby County are edging closer to completing the signing of Martyn Waghorn, according to Sky Sports News.

Waghorn has reportedly told Ipswich Town that he wants to leave the club with Derby well placed to finalise this deal.

The 28-year-old joined Ipswich from Rangers last summer and scored 16 goals – as well as providing 11 assists – to help his side finish in mid-table in the Championship.

The Tractor Boys are desperate to keep the former Wigan Athletic, Sunderland and Leicester City man but he is keen on a move to Pride Park instead.

Sheffield United have dropped out of the race to sign Waghorn due to Ipswich’s asking price, leaving Derby free to complete this deal if they stump up the cash.

Waghorn could become Derby’s fourth summer signing after the arrivals of Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and Florian Jozefzoon.

The Verdict

If Derby sell Matej Vydra – last season’s golden boot winner – then they need to replace his goals.

Although the Rams will not want to lose Vydra, selling him, Dave Nugent and Cameron Jerome and replacing them with Waghorn and Jack Marriott would be fantastic business.

Waghorn showed Championship viewers just what he can do last season and you can expect him to kick on at Derby.
