Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has told Derbyshire Live that he would still like to bring Shay Given back into the club as part of the coaching staff.
Given is currently out of work after leaving Derby this summer and has not been involved with the Rams at all in pre-season as they prepare for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.
The current situation at Pride Park has put the club in a difficult position and as a result they have been unable to sign any players so far this summer.
Speaking recently about Given, Rooney was quick to provide clarity on his stance over potentially bringing the former goalkeeper back to the club:
“It’s the same as I said last weekend. Unfortunately it is a position we are in with other players who are out of contract. It is difficult for us to do anything at the minute. Hopefully when that opens up and changes, we can get Shay in.”
Quiz: What was the score the last time Derby County played at each of these 24 stadiums?
Given has vast experience in football after taking in a playing career which sure him play for the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City and Aston Villa over the years and is now making his way through the coaching pathway.
Derby get their season underway on Saturday 7th August when they take on Huddersfield Town.
I think Derby would be wise to bring back Given into the fold if the opportunity arose to do so, as he has a level of experience in the game that is very hard to come by in most cases.
The situation on and off the pitch is tough for everyone at the club and I really hope that things become a lot smoother for Rooney moving forwards.
If they can get some players through the door, it will make a hell of a difference and just give everyone at Pride Park a real boost.
There is still plenty of talent in the current squad but they are in desperate need of new additions in order to add depth before the season kicks off in just over a weeks time.
