Derby County and their proposed takeover: What do we know so far? Is it likely to happen?

Derby County’s proposed takeover has been the talk of the time for some time now.

Results on the pitch have been hard to come by this term under Phillip Cocu, but with Wayne Rooney now in interim charge things have certainly showed subtle signs of improvement.

The player-coach will be hoping that this can be a sign of more permanent things to come.

Of course that will depend on how the takeover unfolds.

What do we know so far?

A report emerged early in November claiming that Mel Morris had agreed a deal in principle with Derventio Holdings (UK) Limited with regards to the sale of the club.

Since things had gone quiet leading many supporters to feel a tad anxious with regards to the situation.

However a reassuring statement has since been released by the club claiming that a deal could be completed before Christmas.

It read: “In order to remove any ongoing speculation, both parties want to assure Derby County’s supporters that the acquisition of the club by Derventio Holdings is on track, with a view to completion before Christmas.

“Both parties will now return to applying their full attention to the completion of the deal and will not be making any further comment.”

While the feeling among supporters is still frustration, there’s no doubt that this is a very positive update.

With a deal on the cusp of completion it should hopefully resolve any uncertainty surrounding the club and ensure that Derby are in a positive to build for the future and mount a genuine challenge for promotion in the coming years.

Is it likely to happen?

Given the nature of the recent announcement it seems like it’s only a matter of time until the deal goes through.

Supporters were growing sceptical about the deal due to the lack of communication, however the latest statement from the club seems to have addressed those concerns.

It now seems like a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ the takeover will go through – something which will bring excitement and relief to supporters in equal measure.
