Manchester United are reportedly considering keeping both James Garner and Teden Mengi at Old Trafford for 2021/22, in what looks a blow for both Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

Garner and Mengi impressed while on loan at Forest and Derby during the second half of the season, with both East Midlands clubs understood to be keen to re-sign their respective United loanees in the summer.

However, it appears they may not get the chance to do that and the pair may be staying at Old Trafford next term.

According to the Manchester Evening Post, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering bringing Garner and Mengi into the senior squad next season.

The decision is not made yet, however, with the report indicating that a loan move could happen if United have enough squad depth.

It is believed that could be to a Premier League side but the call will not be made until after Solskjaer has had a chance to run the rule over the duo in pre-season.

The Verdict

This looks like a blow for both Derby and Forest, who will have been hoping they could bring back their United loanees ahead of next season.

Garner was simply brilliant for the Reds through the second half of 2020/21 and with high squad turnover expected at the City Ground, his return would represent something of a coup for Chris Hughton.

Mendi took a little bit of time to force himself into the side but certainly impressed Derby boss Wayne Rooney, hence the club's interest in re-signing him ahead of next season.

With Matt Clarke set to return to Brighton, George Edmundson's Rangers future unclear, and Andre Wisdom out of contract, centre-back looks like a problem position for the Rams at the moment.
