Gary Rowett is keen to link up with David Cotterill at Derby County this summer, after the midfielder was told he was surplus to requirements at Birmingham City, reports the Birmingham Mail.

Rowett and Cotterill had spent time together at St Andrew’s over the last two years, but could now link-up at Derby.

Following Rowett’s surprise sacking in December, Cotterill fell out-of-favour at Birmingham and was sent out on-loan in January.

Cotterill spent the second-half of the 2016/17 campaign with Bristol City on-loan, where he made 13 appearances and scored two goals, helping Lee Johnson’s side survive relegation.

The 29-year old has now been told he can leave St Andrew’s for free this summer, despite having one-year remaining on his contract with Birmingham, as he appears to not feature in Harry Redknapp’s plans.

Rowett is keen to add Cotterill to his Derby squad this summer, after the winger impressed under his management at St Andrew’s, where he featured regularly during Rowett’s two-year spell in Birmingham.

Derby will face competition for the Welsh international, with Ian Holloway’s Queens Park Rangers also considering a move for Cotterill.

Since he made his debut for Bristol City in 2004, Cotterill has played for eight different clubs across the Football League, making over 300 appearances.
