Derby have confirmed that winger Luke Thomas has left to join Barnsley after an undisclosed fee was agreed between the clubs.

The 20-year-old was highly-rated at Pride Park and was set to return to the Rams for pre-season having spent the previous campaign on loan at Coventry City.

During his time with the Sky Blues, Thomas scored five goals in 44 games and impressed with his overall ability and energy, but he couldn't help Mark Robins' side into the top six as they just fell short towards the end of the season.

And, he is now on the move again, with the Rams official site confirming that a move to Oakwell has gone through, subject to EFL approval, although they didn't mention how much the Championship side have paid.

Thomas joined Derby in 2016 from Cheltenham Town, who will now be entitled to 15 per cent of the fee the Tykes have paid, and managed just two league appearances for the east Midlands outfit in that time.

He becomes the second summer signing for Daniel Stendel's side since they won promotion.

The Verdict

This is a good signing for Barnsley as Thomas is an exciting prospect and is exactly the sort of player they have been targeting in recent windows.

Whilst Derby won't be pleased to lose the talented winger, the reality is that he probably wouldn't have made the first-team next season.

So, it's a move that suits all parties and Thomas deserves credit for looking to go somewhere that will get him regular minutes.
