The Sun have reported that Derby County have joined the cluster of clubs in the hunt for a cut-price deal for Norwich City striker Cameron Jerome in the January transfer window.

Gary Rowett will battle it out with Cardiff City, whom they sit one point and two places above in the Championship table as both clubs look to add firepower to their promotion bids.

The Rams are in that crucial second automatic promotion spot but Matej Vydra is the only one of their frontmen who looks able to score on a consistent basis and that is why former Birmingham boss Rowett is in the market for a £1.5m deal for Jerome, who has also plied his trade at St Andrew's in the past.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke is under fire after underperforming in his debut season in English football and is willing to offer the striker out at such a low price in order to get a man who has netted just twice this season off the wage bill at Carrow Road.

He has 18 months left on his current deal, although there is an option to extend that for a further year should the Canaries wish to do so.

The promotion-chasers are not the only clubs interested in Jerome as his former club Birmingham and Sunderland are both also keen as they look for goals to fire them out of the relegation dogfight.

The Verdict:

Gary Rowett relied heavily on Clayton Donaldson when he had Birmingham punching well above their weight and Jerome is a similar player - a workhorse who does not quite score enough.

Derby have a squad packed with Championship experience. Jerome would certainly add to that and a cut-price deal means it would not be the end of the world if he had to be jettisoned at the end of the season.

Almost as important as signing Jerome is not letting Cardiff secure his services because he is exactly the kind of willing runner that Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock makes a habit of reinvigorating.
