Derby boss Phillip Cocu gives verdict on his team selection after thrashing from rivals

Derby County manager, Phillip Cocu, has given his verdict on the Rams’ team selection after his side were beaten emphatically by rivals, Nottingham Forest.

Albert Adomah and Joe Lolley put Forest in charge in the first-half, before João Carvalho wrapped up the tie.

Cocu made ten changes from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom but his side couldn’t muster up even a single shot on-target.

The Rams have now failed to win in four games, and a slow start to the Championship season has seen them sit in 16th place.

Speaking to DerbyshireLive on whether it was a gamble to make changes, Cocu said: “No, I think if you look at the team of Forest, it’s the same. They also have a schedule that is really extremely busy.

“You cannot play all games, it is just impossible. They (his players) did well in the first cup game (at Scunthorpe).

“It was not all youngsters that played. A few, yes, but we also had some experience in the team with Shinnie and Curtis Davies.

“So it was not all youngsters, but the combination of some youngsters and some players who have not played so much, that is true.

“But we have to look at the total picture. We have had, and still have some injuries. We have to adapt and we have to be careful with the players to keep them fit.”

The Verdict

Cocu decided to make a lot of changes, as did Lamouchi, however, Derby lacked any real zip to their play and their fans will have come home very disappointed.

Maybe Cocu didn’t understand that despite the fixture perhaps being a bit more less important than a league game, it’s still a big rivalry and massive for supporters.

3,300 fans travelled to the City Ground and failed to even see a shot on-target. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone who played Tuesday night gets a chance in the coming weeks as it was not good enough from the Rams.
