Amid Wayne Rooney’s highly anticipated introduction to Derby County, Rams fans have become even further enthused by the speculation that Luciano Acosta could be on his way too.

The rumour emerged after it was reported that the Pride Park-bound Englishman had pulled Acosta for a chat to discuss the possibility of following him to the Midlands.

Acosta is a good player and has proven to be quite the creative player in the MLS, but the Championship is a very different league. It's worth mentioning that, as an attacking midfielder, the 25-year-old Argentine scored just six goals and got one assist in the league last season.

He hasn’t quite got the record or footballing CV to warrant Derby going all in on the tricky South American. But that record isn’t the only reason Derby fans should resist getting excited about the club’s focus on him.

Their worry should stem from their club’s quite bizarre focus on signing attack-minded players ahead of the January transfer window.

With Rooney coming in, the Rams have a plethora of good attacking options in the form of Martyn Waghorn, Chris Martin and Jack Marriott. In attacking midfield, they have Tom Lawrence who is actually the side’s top scorer so far this season.

The only real speculation surrounding the club’s transfer activity has been towards Acosta and Luke McCowan – another attacking midfielder playing for Ayr United in the Scottish Championship.

Unbelievably, there has been a lack in talk over signing a goalkeeper or a defender which is, perhaps, where Derby are most thin or have the least amount of quality.

Kelle Roos – occupying the net for Derby this season – has been the victim of sarcastic jeering at Pride Park when he manages to catch a ball and has quickly fallen out of favour with the Derby supporters after his costly mistake in the Championship play-off final defeat to Aston Villa.

Given the saga surrounding Richard Keogh, and recent injury to Matt Clarke, Derby are also short on central defenders. In their last match with east Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest, the side were forced to deploy Krystian Bielik in that role due to their sheer lack of options.

Derby do have George Evans and Andre Wisdom who could fill the vacant spot if necessary, but as we wait to here about the seriousness of Clarke’s injury, the Rams have only one out-and-out centre back in the from of Curtis Davies.

So, the club must look to improve on the quality and quantity of their back five before they splash more cash on attacker.
