It would have come as a surprise to many fans when it was announced that Derby’s Mason Mount was included in Gareth Southgate’s England senior side.
But with five league goals already to his name this season, he has certainly justified his place in the 3 Lions’ squad ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Croatia on Friday.
Frank Lampard’s Derby side are currently just a point off the play-off positions after 12 league games this season and Mount has been a crucial member of the Rams side that is likely to be challenging for promotion to the Premier League this season.
Speaking ahead of England’s match against Croatia, Mount described it as “a dream” to be involved in the England senior side.
“It’ll be an unreal experience playing in front of no fans in such a big international game.
“It’s obviously such a dream to be involved in an England senior team – I have no words to describe how I’d feel if I got on.”
Southgate’s men will come up against a number of high-profile players against Croatia, with the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic both expected to feature on Friday.
Mount is remaining focused on the task at hand with England but expressed his admiration at the prospect of coming up against one of his idols in Modric.
“Watching the game as a young kid, I always remember watching Modric at Tottenham in the Premier League,” he said.
“I watched him a lot and they are all top, top players.
“You always want to test yourself against the best, so I’m obviously looking forward to it.”
Mount is a good young player with plenty of ambition.
If the time is right during the game, it’d be no surprise to see Gareth Southgate give him a chance to feature.
