Colchester United's late surge towards the play-off places was derailed in recent weeks due to a loss of form at the vital time.

The U's have lost their last three consecutive matches which has now mathematically confirmed that they will be staying in League Two next year.

As a result, some of Colchester's best players will be linked with moves away.

With Courtney Senior recently signing a new deal, a number of League One clubs could instead turn their attention to Sammie Szmodics, who plays up front or as an attacking midfielder.

Szmodics has been in fine form this year and here FLW shines a spotlight on his season and considers whether Charlton Athletic should make a move for him.

Charlton are in the play-off zone in League One at the moment, hoping that Lee Bowyer will fire them to promotion and a return to the Championship.

Although that will be his primary focus, there will be scouts out watching lower league football to identify some transfer targets.

If Charlton have sent any scouts to watch Colchester, they'd have seen an impressive 12 goals and four assists in 35 appearances for Szmodics.

The Colchester academy graduate might be short in stature but he has a good shot conversion rate of 22% and he is continuing to impress in League Two.

I am sure that the 22-year-old could make the step up to League One football and it would be a fantastic learning curve for him, only bettering his career and benefiting Charlton in the mean time.

But would he be able to step up two divisions?

Perhaps one day, but Szmodics needs to make a sensible career choice and only jump up one division rather than making a big move too early.

So, in sum, if Charlton go up via the play-offs then they should leave this transfer and aim higher.

But for next year's League One campaign, he would be an excellent addition.
