Sunderland striker Andrew Nelson sent an emotional message to the Black Cats' fans as he finalised a deal to Scottish Premier League side Dundee.

The 21-year-old has been on loan with Darlington in the National League North, but his impressive displays were sure to find a bigger stage despite the short loan. He bagged six goals in just five appearances for the Quakers.

After spending time at Falkirk last season, he's well known north of the border. Chances in the first team at the Stadium of Light have been limited, meaning he had to leave for regular first team football.

He's tweeted an emotional goodbye to fans, clearly he's a player with a huge affinity for the Mackems but one who has had to make a big decision over his future.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you @SunderlandAFC," he tweeted. "Thoroughly enjoyed every minute I was there I wish everyone back at the club the best for the future and I hope you get back to where you belong."

Nelson is a product of the Sunderland youth academy and has also spent time on loan at Harrogate and Hartlepool. Despite that he never managed to find a way into the Sunderland first team, with Josh Maja and Joel Asoro both ahead of him in the pecking order at one time or another.

The Verdict

This could be a great signing for Dundee. Nelson is clearly a talented boy who could have done a job in League Two or even the lower reaches of League One.

The move to Scotland is a good one though, it affords a wide variety of challenges and an opportunity to develop as a player. It's a shame he couldn't break through for Jack Ross, especially given their current status.
