Dennis Cirkin sends message to Sunderland supporters after 1-0 win v Sheffield Wednesday

Sunderland earned a crucial 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in their League One play-off semi final on Friday evening.

The Black Cats’ long awaited return to the Championship feels as close as it has been in a very long time after the victory over the Owls.

Alex Neil’s play-off experience with Norwich City has given him a leg up in locking horns with Darren Moore and the Wearside club will be optimistic of holding onto their advantage at Hillsborough Stadium on Monday evening.

Neil has made the Black Cats a lot harder to beat since replacing Lee Johnson in the dugout and his back three system proved mightily effective to push them into the play-off places.

Dennis Cirkin is comfortably the most inexperienced member of the defensive trio, but equally as crucial, and the 20-year-old took to Instagram to express his emotions after the victory.

He wrote: “What a game to return to.

“Incredible support onto Monday.”

Cirkin has turned out to be an outstanding piece of summer transfer business, and with two years left on his contract, the Black Cats have a player capable of stepping up in the Neil era in the coming years.

The Verdict

Sunderland quiz: Does the Stadium of Light have a bigger or smaller capacity than these 20 stadiums?

1 of 20

1. Portman Road (Ipswich)

Hillsborough will be rocking on Monday evening, and the Black Cats are still weaker overall in the absence of Nathan Broadhead at the top of the pitch.

Sunderland will need to be evenly more organised and resolute at the back to stand up to the test, with Moore’s men certain to improve on their performance at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats have been in this position before in years gone by, however, the more youthful look to the squad this time around could help the collective handle the pressure a little better.

It will be interesting to see how Moore sets the Owls up on Monday, with the Black Cats knowing that a clean sheet will see them take their place at Wembley Stadium in the final.
