Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer is looking to further strengthen his squad, ahead of the Addicks' return to the English second tier, with Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis a target, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Much-traveled Marquis scored 26 goals for Rovers last season with the club keen on negotiating a new deal for the prolific scorer, who is entering the last year of his current deal and who is bound to be missed by new manager Darren Moore if he was to depart.

The Addicks have already added two strikers to their team this summer, having sealed deals for Macualey Bonne and Chuks Aneke, but it appears another one is on their radar.

So would Marquis prove a good signing for Charlton?

We discuss........

George Dagless

"Definitely worth a look.

"Marquis proved himself a fine marksman at League One level - as did Charlton forward Lyle Taylor - last year.

"Taylor deserves a shot at the Championship this year and in many ways Marquis does too for the work that he has done in recent seasons.

"How it would work between Marquis and Taylor together I don't know. Both are capable of leading the line but could they work together as a pair?

"Taylor likes to run the channels when possible and so in that sense, there might be scope for him to work with Marquis.

"If they can work it out it could be a very productive partnership."

George Brooks

"I think this would be a brilliant signing for Charlton, as they look to establish themselves in the Championship again.

"Marquis has been one of the best goalscorers outside of the top two divisions over the past couple of seasons.

"He was magnificent for Doncaster last season and will probably feel that he deserves a chance to prove himself in the Championship.

"I personally think that he's ready to make an impact in the second tier, but if things don't work out and Charlton are relegated back to League One, then they will already have one of the stop strikers in the third tier.

"It's a little bit of a risk given his lack of experience at Championship level, but it's definitely a risk work taking."

Gary Hutchinson

“It would be one of the bargains of the summer. I’m surprised we’ve got to less than a week before the opening round of games without Marquis moving.

“He scores goals; pure and simple. Like Jack Marriott before him, whatever division he’s in he will score. That’s what proper prolific players do. Sign John Marquis, give the other ten players the task of putting the ball at his feet in the area and you have goals.

“The Addicks look a little short to me at the moment. They need that extra edge that will keep them out of the bottom three and a player like Marquis might just be it. Chuks Aneke and Macauley Bonne won’t, but Taylor and Marquis up front might just do that.

“This should be priority this week, urgent, serious and coming first above everything and anything else.”
