“Definitely not” – Blackburn Rovers sign 26-year-old: Is he a guaranteed starter? The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Blackburn Rovers have announced the signing of midfielder Sammie Szmodics from Peterborough United following Posh’s relegation to League One.

The 26-year-old has been a core part of the Peterborough team over the last two seasons celebrating a promotion and suffering a relegation with the side.

Last season he made 36 Championship appearances and was able to contribute six goals in that time too making him a highlight in an otherwise fairly poor side.

Despite doing well for his side last season, Szmodics otherwise has three Championship appearances under his belt from his time with Bristol City.

Therefore, we asked three writers here at FLW whether the midfielder looks set to be a starting fixture in Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Rovers side.

Marcus Ally

Definitely not.

It is an eye-catching signing and a three-year deal shows a lot of faith in his ability, but with Tyrhys Dolan, Sam Gallagher, Dilan Markanday, Ryan Hedges and Ben Brereton-Diaz still in the squad it will not be easy to earn regular starts.

If Jon Dahl Tomasson looks to deploy a number ten it would be a straight shoot-out between Bradley Dack and Szmodics, which at the moment looks like a battle that the former Posh man would lose.

Blackburn are light at the back and in midfield, so if Szmodics is able to show Tomasson that he can contribute in a number eight role, he would substantially increase his chances of cementing a place in the starting XI.

I would be very surprised to see Szmodics being a starting XI player for Tomasson given the amount of options he currently has.

In that attacking midfield role, the 26-year-old is competing with Bradley Dack who, when fit, is a massive force in the side.

In 140 appearances for Rovers so far, Dack has got 50 goals under his belt with every season in the Championship minus one.

This is still a good signing for Rovers given Dack’s injury issues of late and Szmodics will no doubt be a quality back up player to have in the side.

However, with little second tier experience under his belt so far, in a team pushing for promotion the 26-year-old doesn’t look like a starting player.

Charlie Gregory

No, with Szmodics at Blackburn I think the club might use him more as a rotation option, even with as the player that he is.

Even with the player looking impressive for Peterborough, I feel that Rovers just have too many options to choose from to warrant the forward getting regular football. Gallagher, Dolan, Buckley and even BBD will be the players in contention if the Chile international stays.

However, if BBD does end up leaving the club, then I think that playing Szmodics could happen. The player has certainly proven to be a very good player and he knows how to score.

It’s just the Bristol City record and also the lack of playing time – can the player manage to prove the Championship is his level? Blackburn will be hoping so and will want similar goal return to his Peterborough record this season.
