They say never say never in football, but it is looking like a guarantee that Ipswich Town will be playing League One football next season.

Under Paul Hurst they got off to an awful start, turning to Paul Lambert in October to help turn things around but improvement has been close to non-existent.

They sit rock bottom of the second tier with 35 matches played and 12 points behind Reading who sit outside the bottom three.

More bad news arrived this week as well when it was revealed that MLS side Chicago Fire were tracking club captain and experienced centre-back Luke Chambers.

The 33-year-old has been an impressive mainstay since arriving at Portman Road back in 2012, racking up over 300 appearances for the club in that time, including 32 in the current campaign.

His contract is set to expire in the summer but what will he be thinking regarding these latest rumours?

I think he will be incredibly relieved to have a club come in to rescue him from the mess around Ipswich Town.

The club had been on the decline for a while but the sacking of Mick McCarthy last season seems to have accelerated it significantly.

At Chambers’ age it is more important than ever to be enjoying your football. Will he do that in League One with Ipswich? I doubt it.

Chicago Fire’s presence will surely be incredibly welcome.
