Former Chelsea defender Todd Kane has claimed he came close to joining Sheffield United last January, and also received offers from Derby County last year, prior to his move to QPR in July.

Kane joined QPR during the summer transfer window following the expiry of his Chelsea contract, having spent the 2018/19 season on loan with another Championship side in the shape of Hull City.

However, it seems that loan spell at the KCOM Stadium could have been cut short midway through the previous campaign in favour of a move to The Blades, as detailing the interest he received throughout the course of last year, Kane told Goal.com: "I had Sheffield United and Derby County on the table last January.

"I was supposed to be moving to Sheffield United but the deal didn’t get done for whatever reason."

It seems Derby were not put off by missing out on Kane at that point, with the defender claiming that Frank Lampard then again tried to sign him in the summer, prior to his own return to Chelsea in the close season.

That move is one it appears Kane would have been open to, as he continued: "Then, in the summer, Lampard wanted me at Derby before he moved to Chelsea.

"It would have been an easy decision to go and work with Lampard at Derby. I felt like it would have been a great move for my career, then that was out of the window. Then QPR stepped forward."

Since joining QPR on a three-year deal last summer, Kane has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Mark Warburton's side, helping them to 13th place in the current Championship standings.

The Verdict

It does seem as though this has worked out well for Kane in the end.

Given Sheffield United were seemingly not interested in him in the summer, after they had won promotion to the Premier League, you feel it is possible there would not have been too many opportunities for him there this season.

The same could also be said at Derby, where the change in manager could have also thrown the benefits of that move into doubt.

As it is, Kane looks to found some stability for himself at QPR, and after several years of moves away from Chelsea on loan, that is something he will surely be pleased about.
