Football League World's Reading fan pundit Harry Chafer has revealed what has gone wrong for Jose Gomes during his time with the club.

Reports emerged on Monday night via Courtney Friday of the Reading Chronicle that the Portuguese was on the verge of being dismisses, and Chafer thinks he knows what may have irked the board.

"The only argument really for wanting Gomes to go is the results in the last few weeks," the regular punter told Football League World.

"One point from our last five games is not good enough with the amount of quality we have in the squad, but if you look at the performances in more detail, we should be so much further up the league than we currently find ourselves.

"That says to me that all it takes is one win and it should kick-start our season, and we're not far away from finding that win.

"Some of Gomes' tactical decisions have been odd in recent times, having been accused of going too 'gung-ho' too early in games. But, hindsight is a wonderful thing and if those tactical decisions go the other way then he gets praised as a tactical genius. It is very fine margins we're talking about here.

"I don't believe Gomes has made many mistakes at all - in fact, he's reunited the club and the fans when we were in some of our darkest days. He deserves to be given time."

With 11 matches played this season, the Royals sit inside the relegation zone in 22nd place, with no wins in their last siz league matches and just two all season.

Gomes took over from Paul Clement in December 2018 and guided the club to safety in what was an intense relegation scrap at times, with the powers that be backing him heavily in the summer transfer window.

Large sums were splashed on attacking duo George Puscas and Lucas Joao with Michael Morrison, Charlie Adam, Matt Miazga and Ovie Ejaria all among those to arrive as well.
