Dean Windass has suggested that he does not know whether his son Josh Windass will be remaining with Sheffield Wednesday this summer amid all the speculation on his future.

Windass is a player that has been generating a lot of transfer attention this summer already following Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation from the Championship.

Previous reports from the Sheffield Star had revealed that both West Brom and Fulham are interested in making a move for the attacker this summer after he fired in nine goals and provided five assists in 41 league games last term.

While there have also been reports that the likes of Cardiff City, Middlesbrough and Stoke City are also interested in making a potential move to bring the attacker in from Sheffield Wednesday during the window.

The latest reports have also suggested that Birmingham City have now entered the race for Windass’ signature, with the Blues thought to have enquired into his potential availability.

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Windass reaffirmed that ideally, his son would be wanting to remain at Hillsborough this summer and help them earn promotion but he also confessed he did not know where he will end up given the interest in him.

He said: There’s been a lot of rumours – Fulham, Stoke and West Brom.

“I heard that the players hadn’t been paid, so I don’t know what’s going on.

“But Darren Moore has got a big job next season, even if Josh does stay they will be favourites to go up. I know Josh wants to stay there, but money will determine, I think he’s around the £2m mark people are talking, but I don’t know [whether he will still be there].”

The verdict

This update should be a concerning for Sheffield Wednesday supporters because it does suggest that there is hope for the group of sides that want to sign Windass this summer. The attacker clearly feels that in an ideal world he would want to help the Owls make up for last term and secure an immediate return to the Championship. Circumstances though might mean he takes a different path.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for Sheffield Wednesday to keep hold of a player with Windass’ ability following their relegation to League One. Birmingham now entering the race for his signature will only have complicated matters further and it seems that the 27-year-old will have no shortage of potential options to choose from if he opts to leave Hillsborough.

Whilst it is a major positive that he still wants to remain at Sheffield Wednesday and seems to be willing to commit to the cause in League One, it does seem that Windass has left the door open here for his son to secure a move to another club. It is a massive decision for the 27-year-old and one he needs to get right for the direction of his career.
