Dean Smith shares thoughts on Derby County ahead of Saturday’s clash

There’s no doubt that the game to watch this weekend as a neutral is Derby vs Aston Villa, when the two promotion-chasing sides face off at Pride Park.

Dean Smith has endured a mixed start to life as manager of Aston Villa and he will be concerned with his side’s current away form.

Smith is yet to pick up a single point away from Villa Park and he will be keen to put an end to that dismal record when he faces Frank Lampard’s side at the weekend.

Derby are certainly one of the form teams in the Championship and Lampard’s side will be full of confidence coming into this one.

Smith was full of praise for the Rams boss, who is in his first season as a manager, and the Villa chief praised Lampard for the additions he has made to the Derby squad in the summer.

“He’s started his managerial career very well. He has brought in good young loan players,” Smith stated in a recent press conference.

Smith acknowledged the threat that the Rams pose to his side this weekend, but insists his players will not be fearful of the prospect they face in Derby.

“They play with a lot of energy. I respect them but we are in no way fearful of them.”

The Verdict

Smith certainly does face a tough ask if he is to pick up his first away points in charge of his boyhood club, but in no way is it an impossible task.

Derby have shown small signs that their defensive frailties could damage their promotion chances this season.

If Villa can score an early goal, then Derby will be a team to be got at on Saturday and Villa’s attack-minded side could potentially run out comfortable winners.
