Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told his players that they need to be prepared to adapt to the different challenges that the Championship offers.

Smith's side were superb last time out, beating Derby 3-0 at Pride Park in a game between two sides that play possession-based football.

However, that won't be the case next week, when Villa host local rivals Birmingham in what should be a fesity clash.

Garry Monk's men have proven themselves to be resolute defensively, comfortable out of possession and excellent on the counter.

And, Smith told the Express & Star that his players need to be ready to adapt if they are to be successful.

"Not all games will be like Derby because teams play differently. You have to come up with different ways to beat different teams. We are still a work in progress. We haven’t had loads of time. I have only been here a month."

The emphatic victory over the Rams moved Villa up to 11th ahead of the Second City derby, with the side just four points behind the top six.

The Verdict

This is a good message from Smith and he has experience of the Championship so knows how tough it can be.

As he says, there are so many different styles and that's what makes the league so good to watch and so tough for the teams.

However, Villa will head into any game with confidence, particularly given the manner of the victory last time out.
