Despite Dean Smith's best efforts, Norwich City suffered relegation to the Championship this season.

However, the Canaries boss is ready for the work to start as he aims to build a team that can compete next season and regain promotion to the Premier League.

Last time Norwich were in the Championship, Teemu Pukki was one of the core parts of the team as he scored 26 league goals that season.

Emi Buendia was by his side providing 15 goals too but this season, with Buendia at Aston Villa, Pukki only managed 12 in the top flight.

But Smith feels as though providing him with the necessary support and getting his goalscoring form back will be a key part of his side's success next year as he told Pink Un: "It's really important that we took up our option [on Pukki's contract]. He is key to what we're about. I believe we have players who can supply him here already, but it's also an area that I'm looking to add to as well.

"He's been used to over the previous couple of years getting supplied by Emi. But he was starting to get some good relationship with other players now.

"Kieran Dowell created a couple of goalscoring opportunities for him, and he set up Kieran for his goal at Manchester United as well. I am really pleased with Teemu and what he brings on and off the pitch. I've said before he's low maintenance, but he's well respected as well.

"He doesn't say an awful lot. But when he does, he's listened to, which is really important for us.

"To score 11 again, and match his previous total in the Premier League in a poor season for the club, tells you what he is about."

The Verdict:

If Norwich have a well served Teemu Pukki in their side next season then they will no doubt pose a great threat up front as the 32-year-old has shown the quality he has in the league.

When looking at options for a new partner for the striker, Dean Smith may want to consider longer term options to ensure that if they were to go back to the Premier League, Pukki wouldn't be left isolated again bringing less goals into the side.

However, it is a good start for recruitment and shows a sign of intent from Smith about the type of squad he's building and where he wants his side to be next year.
