Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has revealed that he hopes that new signing Tom Carroll will provide the team with a creative spark in the middle of the park.

The former Tottenham man was a surprise addition at Villa Park, joining on loan until the end of the season from fellow Championship side Swansea.

He got his first taste of action in claret and blue as a substitute when the West Midlands side were held to a 0-0 draw against Reading on Saturday.

And, Smith feels there is certainly more to come from the 26-year-old as he explained to Birmingham Live how he feels he will improve the team: "He’s an intelligent footballer. It was tough for him on he debut (he came off the bench for the last 15 minutes against Reading) because the pitch was cutting up very quickly.

"But he’s a player who can see a pass and unlock the defence. He showed glimpses of what he can bring to the team (on Saturday)."

Smith could hand the left-footer a first start on Friday night as Villa host high-flying Sheffield United as they look to close the gap on the top six.

The Verdict

Clearly Smith thinks a lot of Carroll and he does have qualities that Villa sometimes lack in the midfield.

There is an over-reliance on Jack Grealish when it comes to creating chances, but the new signing should be able to help on that front with his technical ability and passing range.

Now, it's down to Carroll to win a place in the side and justify these comments.
