New Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is hoping to add to his backroom team with a goalkeeping coach and suggested further additions could be made in the coming months.

The former Brentford boss took over during the international break and was joined by long-term assistant Richard O'Kelly, along with former Villa player John Terry.

And, Birmingham Live reveal how Smith told Villa's website exactly where the backroom team needs an addition: "The goalkeeping department is another area we need to go and strengthen. I’ll be sitting down with Suso and Christian and be trying to organise that as soon as possible."

However, other than that, Smith is prepared to get to know his new players and staff before making any decisions: "We wanted to come in, assess the situation and assess the players, then three or four weeks down the line decide which direction we want to go in."

The boyhood fan got off to a perfect start as Villa head coach, with the side beating Swansea 1-0 on Saturday to move to within three points of the top six.

Villa take on Norwich at Carrow Road tomorrow.

The Verdict

This is good from Smith and it shows that he has already identified a way in which the club can improve and he will hope the club sanction an appointment.

It's also a positive to see that he is prepared to give others at the club a chance as he gets to know how people work.

Now, it's down to him to continue to assess the situation and he will hope to keep picking up results in the meantime.
