Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has praised Anwar El Ghazi for taking his chance in recent weeks after his impressive display against West Brom last time out.

Whilst it was an extremely frustrating night on the whole, with Villa conceding a stoppage time equaliser that was handball, there were still positives to take for the manager.

None more so than winger El Ghazi who gave the Albion defence a torrid time and was involved in both goals.

Firstly, his shot was deflected in to give Villa the lead before a stunning sole effort restored their advantage in the second half.

Additionally, he was direct in his play and showed a lot of skill and technique from the right flank.

And, he certainly impressed Smith who told the Express & Star how pleased he was with how the former Ajax man has adapted.

"His attitude has been great. And he can score those kind of goals quite often – he’s a threat.

"There’s always a transition period for people who come into the Championship. It’s very hard physically. Certainly, he’s back and ready."

The Verdict

El Ghazi has a lot of talent but he has struggled for consistency throughout his career.

However, at Villa he is showing how important he can be to the team this season and is benefitting from the attacking football that Smith demands.

Now, it's about maintaining these high standards that he has recently set over the busy Christmas period as Villa look to close in on the play-off places and potentially the top two.
