Aston Villa boss Dean Smith reckons there is more to come from his side after their emphatic win over promotion rivals Derby last time out.

Smith was looking for back-to-back victories for the first time since taking over and his side responded superbly, with three goals in ten minutes in the second half securing a fully merited three points.

Given Derby's form going into it, the manner of the result was particularly pleasing and sent out a real statement.

And, the former Brentford manager was quoted by the Express & Star as saying that whilst there are aspects to improve on, he is delighted with the potential of his side.

"There are still things we need to get better at but when we have a game plan and the players follow it, we look one hell of a team.

"There is a lot more to come from this squad. I said to them Saturday was an opportunity to draw a line in the sand, to show where we are at."

The win moved Villa into the top half and leaves them just four points away from the play-offs ahead of a crucial derby against Birmingham City after the international break.

The Verdict

Smith had got off to a mixed start since taking over at Villa but things really clicked on Saturday and it will worry the rest of the division.

On paper, Villa have a squad capable of challenging with everyone and the challenge for Smith is to get the best out of those players.

They have set the bar now and it's about hitting the levels they showed at Derby in the upcoming months and then Villa will be serious contenders.
