Things are looking up, on the pitch, at Charlton Athletic at the moment having won three League One games in a row under Dean Holden.

The Addicks showed a lot of grit and determination to get past sixth-placed Barnsley to a 2-0 scoreline at The Valley last Saturday, picking up an important three points off the back of their Carabao Cup defeat at Manchester United.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer missed the victory over Lincoln City, the league game prior to the Old Trafford trip, due to a concussion, but that incident was not the reason that the 23-year-old was wearing a protective mask against Barnsley.

Holden explained why that was when he spoke to the South London Press.

He said: "They basically manually manipulated it back into position.

"That’s just a protective thing for the next couple of week.

"The concussion was nothing to do (with the procedure).

"From what I’ve been told it is a procedure that has been needed for a while.

"So it was just when we had a little bit of free time to put it back into place again."

Todd Kane made his debut against the Tykes after arriving on loan from Coventry City for the rest of the season.

But, the 29-year-old left the pitch on the stroke of half time with what looked a hamstring injury.

Holden offered the latest update on the loanee's situation, quotes provided by the South London Press.

He explained: "We’re still waiting (to find out the severity) because we’ve had it looked at.

"We need Coventry involved in it because of the loan, stuff like that.

"As it stands, right now, I’ve not heard anything official just yet.

"We should know by the end of today exactly where we’re going to be with that."

Should Kane be ruled out of the weekend's trip to Peterborough United, the Addicks will be hoping that Steven Sessegnon has recovered in time to start the game, having been withdrawn in the warm-up due to a re-occurring knee issue last Saturday.

The Verdict

The mask did not affect Maynard-Brewer's performance as the promising glovesman put in another assured display to keep a clean sheet.

Though there was no confirmation in terms of Kane's injury, it did not sound promising, with Holden bringing up his parent club, alluding that it may be simpler for the 29-year-old to return to the Sky Blues if the recovery process is a dragged out one.

Holden would probably start at Peterborough in a three at the back formation in aiming to hide the Addicks' weakness at left back, should neither Kane or Sessegnon be available, with Tyreece Campbell and Corey Blackett-Taylor both slotting in at left wing back in the second half against the Tykes.
