He's a player who is making his name in the Premier League, but for Dean Henderson his career could have been so different.

The Manchester United goalkeeper spent last season on loan with Sheffield United as they secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Such was his impact at Bramall Lane, Chris Wilder was determined to bring him back to guard the onion bag as they took on the huge challenge of the top flight.

However this trajectory into the top tier could have been different if a move to Leeds United had played out.

Henderson was speaking to Sheffield United's official website, where he revealed how close he was to joining Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Henderson said: “I’d been down to Leeds, and it looked as though I was signing there.

“Bristol City were very keen as well, and then my agent rang me and said that Sheffield United had been on the back burner. I said to him ‘Why haven’t you told me?’, because I really wanted to go there.

“The gaffer rang me, we spoke on the phone for an hour, and to be honest I was walking there before I even put the phone down. I was just buzzing to come to Bramall Lane.”

The verdict

Dean Henderson is undoubtedly one of the best young goalkeepers in England.

The fact that he has gone on to play in the Premier League, and subsequently been called up for the Three Lions squad, is testament to just how far he's come in the last 18 months.

As far as a move to Leeds United goes, supporters can only wonder whether a goalkeeper of his stature would have made a difference in the hunt for promotion last term.
