EFL pundit Dean Ashton has insisted that Sheffield United have shown enough signs to suggest that they will turn things around this season after an awful start to the new Championship campaign.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side suffered another major setback on Saturday with the Blades suffering their third defeat in four league games at home to Huddersfield Town after a stoppage-time winner from Levi Colwill.

The Blades were at least able to finally register their first goal of the new Championship season with Billy Sharp scoring a 92nd minute equaliser to seemingly help Sheffield United claim a point. That was before that was taken away from them by Huddersfield’s winning goal.

The result leaves Sheffield United in 23rd place in the table with just one point from a possible 12 and that means that the pressure will be starting to mount on Jokanovic to turn things around.

Despite the defeat against Huddersfield, the Blades were at least able to produce a much better performance than they did in their dismal 4-0 loss at West Brom last week. That suggests that there are signs they can turn the corner under Jokanovic.

Speaking to EFL on Quest, Ashton insisted that he is not worried about Sheffield United despite their difficult start to the new season. He also suggested that he had seen enough from their overall display against Huddersfield to suggest that they will eventually come good when their confidence levels improve.

He said: "If you look at the overall performance they were brilliant.

"They had 71% possession and 31 crosses into the box. The quality has to be better but the forwards' runs have got to be a lot better.

"You have got four forwards here and 35-year-old Billy Sharp has come on to get you a goal.

"Something has to change and the confidence levels need to improve.

"But if I was a Sheffield United fan, I would be happy with the performance."

The verdict

Given the quality that Jokanovic has to call upon within his squad and the level of Championship experience there is in the dressing room, you would have to agree with Asthon that eventually the Blades should be able to recover from this awful start to the season.

However, a losing mentality can be one that is very difficult to turn around and that is certainly what Sheffield United are still suffering from after their poor campaign in the Premier League last season.

It seems that Sheffield United are also struggling from a lack of new arrivals into the dressing room to help lift their morale and give them a new positive energy for this season.

West Brom and Fulham have both improved their squads with new signings this summer and have both adapted to life back in the Championship very well as a result.

Jokanovic will need to be given time to turn things around over the coming weeks and the club also need to back him with one or two new faces arriving before the window closes.
