Alex Smithies has left QPR today with Cardiff making their move for the goalkeeper.

The stopper is certainly Premier League level and, earlier according to Sky Sports News on Twitter, he passed a medical with the Welsh side to get to the brink of joining:

And, more recently, the Bluebirds have confirmed the deal:

The fee is believed to be £3m which is probably fair for a player who will surely adapt quickly to new surroundings and, of course, the top flight.

Further, another half a million could be added onto that if the Bluebirds manage to stay up this season coming in the Premier League.

QPR, meanwhile, are going to do well to find a goalkeeper that come in and be at Smithies' level for relatively low cost because he was one of the better stoppers in the league last season.

The Verdict

This is a worrying deal for QPR.

Smithies was one of their better players last season and now the club is set to lose him.

They'll need to look for a replacement but how much of the fee they are set to receive can be invested remains to be seen.
