The 27-year-old, who joined the Terriers in a £600,000 deal from Norwich City two years ago after a successful loan spell, has been told by the West Yorkshire outfit that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the season and he is free to find a new club.

A number of clubs had been linked with the former England Under-21 international, including Championship sides Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, but now Wigan have stepped up their interest and look set to add the former Everton striker to their ranks.

Vaughan was left out of the squad as Chris Powell's side lost to Queens Park Rangers at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday, and the Town boss admitted in the post-match interview that the Birmingham-born player told him that his future lies away from Huddersfield.

His time at the club has been plagued by injury but still returned a modest 33 goals in 92 appearances in all competitions in his three-year spell.

Vaughan hit 14 goals in 33 league games during his initial loan spell which helped keep Huddersfield in the Championship during the 2012/13 campaign and his return of 10 in 23 the following season also played a part in the Terriers avoiding the drop.

Injury meant he was in and out of the side last campaign as he scored seven times in 28 matches while the striker featured once this season when he came off the bench in the 1-1 home draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Should Wigan be able to keep Vaughan away from the injury table, then they have a player who could get the goals that would help them bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.
