Signing a striker has been a top priority for Wednesday this summer after being one of the lowest scorers in the league last season and now reports in Portugal suggest that a deal has been struck with Nacional for the 21-year-old.

The Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal is using his links with Portugal to his advantage and has already captured attacking midfielder Marco Matias from Nacional this summer, as well as Vincent Sasso from Braga.

Born in Angola, Joao came through the youth system at the Estadio da Madeira outfit and has gone on to score eight goals in 57 appearances in all competitions, as well as creating 10 assists.

He had a loan spell at Portuguese second division side SC Mirandela during the 2012/13 season, where he hit 12 goals in 27 games.

The striker has also found the net three times in three outings for the Portugal Under-21 side.

Carvalhal has been tasked with a promotion push this coming season as the club's new owner, Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, has ambitions of taking the South Yorkshire side back to the Premier League.

The Portuguese coach was appointed at the end of June following the sacking of Stuart Gray and quickly delved into the transfer market, signing eight players so far.

Should Joao sign, he will be joining Darryl Lachman, Marco Matias, Lewis Price, Ross Wallace, Lewis McGugan, Vincent Sasso, Jack Hunt and Alex Lopez at Hillsborough this summer.
