Deal Close: Newcastle United on the brink of signing Atlético Madrid defender

Newcastle United are closing in on their fourth signing of the season as Atlético Madrid full-back Jesus Gamez is set to join the club, according to the Northern Echo.

A position that Rafa Benitez has been looking to address in the right back position as there are serious doubts about Dutch international Daryl Janmaat, whose future at Newcastle is obscure.

The Magpies have over the summer been linked with a shock move Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa, however, it has emerged that another Spanish full-back, Jesus Gamez could be joining the club instead.

With the 31-year old struggling to break through into Diego Simeone’s first -eam since making the move from Malaga, it is looking likely that the Spaniard will move to Tyneside imminently.

Rafa Benitez is clearly looking to use his Spanish connections and it appears that his reputation as a coach has persuaded his compatriot to join his ranks, rather than the Premier League clubs that were also interested in signing the full-back.

The report suggests that Gamez will have his medical at the club and finalise the personal terms later this week and it could be one of the most astute signings of the summer.

Newcastle fans, how do you feel about the news? Do you think Jesus Gamez will be a good signing? Do you think he will be a success in England? Is the right back position, a position that needs addressing? Let us hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below!
