The long running saga looks to be coming to a conclusion as Sharp has left the Whites' pre-season tour of Austria to return to England in order to complete a return to Bramall Lane for a third spell.

It now appears that the two clubs have finally struck a deal after being locked in talks for weeks. The rumours of Sharp returning to Sheffield United begun as soon Nigel Adkins was appointed successor to Nigel Clough as he is said to be a big fan of the player having worked with him at Scunthorpe United, Southampton and Reading.

The 28-year-old, who was popular among the Elland Road faithful, has fallen down the pecking order with head coach Uwe Rosler bringing in Lee Erwin and Chris Wood this summer from Motherwell and Leicester City respectively.

Sharp made 33 appearances last season after joining from Southampton, scoring five goals, but was in and out of the side for the majority of the campaign.

He began his career at Sheffield United before joining Scunthorpe in 2005 but returned two years later in a £2million deal. He didn't quite hit it off in his second spell, scoring just eight times in 51 outings, and was sold to Doncaster Rovers in 2010.

Adkins will be hoping to rekindle his form that saw him score 53 goals in 82 games for the Iron as he looks to challenge for promotion this coming season.
