Derby County are set to sign Swedish prospect Ayomide Opeyemi Jibodu, according to the Daily Mail.
Jibodu, who has been playing for AFC United, has been training with the Derby County squad over the last few days ahead of a proposed move to the iPro Stadium.
The Nigerian-born player also trained with Premier League outfit Liverpool last season and has interest Aston Villa as he proves to be a player full of potential.
With Premier League interest prominent, the capture of the young prospect by Derby County looks to be a shrewd move for the club that are striving to reach the top of the Championship this season.
The East-Midlands club have already spent in excess of £20m this summer transfer window as Paul Clement builds a squad that can challenge in the second tier of English football. Now however, the ex-Real Madrid coach is keen to invest in youth talent to bolster Derby’s already impressive youth set-up.
Whether or not the youngster will make a first-team appearance in the near future remains to be seen, but the club understands Jibodu’s potential and are keen to have him on board at Derby.
A club spokesperson for AFC United, when asked about the move, said: “It is important for us that Ayomide is going to a club where the chances are much greater to reach the top, than he may have had at bigger clubs.
“Derby County makes a big bet on its youth academy and currently has six players from their own ranks in the A-team, something that appeals to us very much.”
Derby County have a number of academy graduates in their squad, illustrated by the new contract given to Jamie Hanson last week.
This is a key factor in the move as the youngster looks to go to the club who are most likely to develop his career in the right way.
