Bristol City look set to bring experienced midfielder Gary O’Neil to the club, according to Bristol Post.
The deal is likely to be a free transfer after the 33-year-old turned down the opportunity to sign a new deal with Norwich City this summer.
And, although the Canaries have made efforts to keep him at the club, it seems Bristol City look to be a new challenge for O’Neil and one that he is willing to take on.
Bristol City have refused to comment on the deal as of yet but as it stands, reports have suggested that the midfielder had a medical in Bristol on Wednesday evening.
O’Neil has previously played for the likes of Middlesbrough, West Ham, QPR and Portsmouth. What will impress Lee Johnson most, though, is the fact that he helped QPR, West Ham and Portsmouth to promotion to the big time. As well, he recently helped Norwich to the Premier League before relegation last season.
The fact that he has been promoted to the Premier League four times and made over 400 appearances in the Football League makes O’Neill a very exciting signing for the Robins.
Of course, at the age of 33, he isn’t going to bring bundles of energy to the midfield but he will almost certainly bring experience and know-how.
This deal looks to be one that signposts Bristol City’s aspirations of finishing as high as possible next season and other signings look to be in the process as well – most notably in the shape of Lee Tomlin who is in early talks with Championship side.
