The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has had a clause in his contract activated by the West Midlands side and he is suggested to be on his way to England to have a medical and discuss personal terms.

Should the captain make the move to the second tier of English football, it will be the second player in a matter of weeks leaving FC Groningen for the Championship following the arrival of Tjaronn Chery at Queens Park Rangers.

This could be a shrewd signing for Birmingham City, after having had lots of disappointments in the past few weeks after missing out on the likes of Rob Kiernan who joined Rangers, Robert Tesche who stayed with Nottingham Forest and Diego Fabbrini who looks set to join Middlebrough Рthis could be a timely boost ahead of the start of the new season.

The Blues will be hoping for a good season after what was a mixed campaign for Rowett’s side last season, with the likes of Clayton Donaldson signing a new deal at the club, Birmingham may be a surprise contender for a top six spot.

Blues fans, what do you make of this news? Will you be happy to see a new face coming through the door? Are you surprised at the fact that the club are actually spending money on players? Does it show intent or stupidity? Let us know in the comment section down below!
