Championship outfit Bristol City saw defender Hordur Magnusson’s potential loan move to FC Rostov fall through on deadline day, reports The Bristol Post.

The 24-year-old only moved to Ashton Gate last year following a long stint at Italian giants Juventus, although he never made a single first team appearance for the club during his stay in Turin.

However, the Iceland international, who was part of their squad for their stunning Euro 2016 campaign albeit didn’t feature, played a prominent role in the Robins’ rise to 17th place in the Championship last term, appearing 28 times in the league and bagging one goal, which came in their opening day win over Wigan Athletic.

Yet it seemed that the defender would be leaving the club this summer as a deal to take him to Russian top-flight side FC Rostov was in place, although recent reports suggest that the move fall apart late on deadline day.

Magnusson has failed to make a league appearance under manager Lee Johnson this season but reportedly took some time to confirm his desire to move to Rostov, while reportedly there were also hold ups at the Bristol City end, resulting in a deal failing to go through before Russia’s 10pm deadline.

And this leaves the 24-year-old defender at Ashton Gate until at least January, and indeed with a battle on his hands in a bid to recapture a place in Johnson’s starting eleven.

The Verdict: There would have been some nervous Bristol City supporters milling around on deadline day, with Aden Flint’s future at the club far from certain heading into the final day of the window.

As it happened, no-one left Ashton Gate on Thursday, not even Iceland defender Hordur Magnusson, who looked set to join Russian side FC Rostov only for the deal to fall through, for one reason or another.

With summer signing Nathan Baker and captain Bailey Wright currently the first choice centre-back pairing at the club, with Flint also an excellent option, Magnusson looks set for a tricky time over the coming months getting back into manager Lee Johnson’s first team, which is likely why a loan move was in the offing for the 24-year-old.

As it is though, he remains a Bristol City player.
