Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater has sent a message of support to Blackpool goalkeeper Mark Howard after he picked up a season-ending injury.

The League One club confirmed the news on their official website on Saturday, saying he had snapped his achilles in their 3-0 defeat to Burton Albion.

Writing on Instagram, alongside a photo of the pair celebrating together, Wheater wrote:

“All the best to my mate on his injury . Be back in no time pal #goodtimes.”

The photograph was a throwback to the Trotters’ dramatic final day escape last season, one of Howard’s last matches for the club before moving in the summer.

Wheater has appeared 28 times in what has been a shoddy campaign from Phil Parkinson’s men with League One football looking inevitable next season.

They currently sit second bottom of the Championship table with just eight matches left to save themselves but with eight points to make up too.

The verdict

Getting an injury like this at this stage of Howard’s career could prove lethal so it is good to see Wheater continuing to show support.

The pair were part of one Bolton’s most famous results so it is no surprise to see them still firm friends.

It may have ended his season but with Blackpool not going down and with only very slim hopes of promotion it is not too big a blow to club or player.
