Former Bolton Wanderers favourite David Wheater has been showing his support for his former club following a tormenting period which nearly saw them liquidated.

The Oldham Athletic centre-back attended the Trotters' EFL Trophy clash with Bradford City on Tuesday night, a match the Bantams ended up winning on penalties.

The 32-year-old posted a photograph of the University of Bolton Stadium on his Instagram story, writing alongside it: "Come to support the Trotters."

During an eight-year stay with the club, Wheater made 236 appearances, including a spell as captain in his final season with them.

After looking like they may go bust, the Trotters were saved at the final hour by Football Ventures and it finally gave them the opportunity to start strengthening their side in the summer transfer window and hire a manager.

Keith Hill was brought in whilst Jack Hobbs, Will Buckley, Jake Wright, Joe Bunney, Josh Emmanuel, Liam Bridcutt, James Weir, Thibaud Verlinden, Daryl Muprhy and Chris O'Grady all made the move to Greater Manchester in a bid to get the club back on track.

The verdict

Whatever you may think of his playing abilities, Wheater is clearly a class act off the pitch.

He always gave 100% for the club last season despite being in a situation where he and his teammates had to go unpaid, and you feel that their relegation would have been far more emphatic without him there.

Bolton will almost certainly struggle to survive this season. But at least with Hill in the dug-out and a big batch of players arriving, they have given themselves a glimmer of hoper.
