David Prutton has warned Wycombe Wanderers fans to be wary of any potential slip-ups going forward as the Chairboys top the League One table after their win over Tranmere.

Goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa and Joe Jacobson sealed the win for the Buckinghamshire side at Prenton Park, taking them three points clear of 2nd placed Ipswich Town.

It means that it is the highest position Wycombe have been in during their 132-year-history, which has seen plaudits come the way of Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth for the job he has done with limited resources available.

Speaking to journalist Jonathan Oakes on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, Prutton gave encouragement to Ainsworth about the job the 46-year-old has done in his seven years in charge.

Prutton said:

"I can see why that group of people players and fans love him, want him to stay, want to carry on going wherever this journey may end up."

However, he also cautiously warned the club not to fall into the same trap as last season.

"At this moment in time, there is a note of caution that they were in a similar position last season - they were doing well then they hit the buffers for the best part of ten games, and he knows that it's always around the corner at this particular level of football, but he'll be working night and day to make sure that doesn't happen."

The Verdict

Prutton is right on both counts here. Firstly, Ainsworth has done a brilliant job at Wycombe, and his stability in the role and the mentality he instils in his players are big factors into why they have been outperforming their expectations.

Nevertheless, Wycombe also had a relatively successful first half to last season in League One, only to falter and just stay up by the finest of margins. You would hope that the side has learnt from previous mistakes.
