Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will have the re-structuring process in full swing at Elland Road, as he looks to improve on last season's failure to gain promotion either automatically or via the end of season play-offs, where they ultimately lost out to Derby County at the semi-final stage.

Former Leeds player and now Sky Sports pundit David Prutton feels Dwight Gayle should be a target for Bielsa at Leeds, as reported in the YEP.

Prutton said: "Leeds are expected to rely mainly on the loan market, and loan signings from Premier League teams made the difference last year, not just at Aston Villa but at West Brom too. Look how many goals Dwight Gayle scored. If he is someone that is available I would look seriously into that."

If Leeds did manage to capture the signing of the Newcastle striker, would he start over Roofe?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

"He would be a key player. Bielsa should try and work them both into the starting line-up if possible, but Gayle has to start as he offers Leeds what they lacked last season: goals.

"The drawback for Bielsa would be his all-round game, as he can be very reliant on service, whereas Roofe scores goals and provides."

"Gayle is consistent at this level and he could be the difference maker for Leeds next season."

Ben Lang

"Yes I think so. You just need to look at his record in the Championship.

"Roofe suffered from injuries towards the end of the season, and although is quality is unmistakable, Gayle showed more consistency last season.

"A number of clubs are also reported to be interested in Roofe, and Leeds would definitely feel more comfortable letting him go with Gayle at the club."

Louie Chandler

"I am not sure if he would but he should.

"There is not a more reliable goalscorer in the Championship than Dwight Gayle and if Leeds are lucky enough to sign him he should be the first name on the teamsheet.

"We saw against Villa just how industrious he can be so I suspect Marcelo Bielsa would be a big fan of his as well."

Toby Wilding

"I'd pick Gayle all day out of these two.

"Roofe has been impressive this season, but Gayle has shown season after season that he can hit 20 plus goals at this level, and that reliability swings it in his favour for me.

"A striker they know can provide that sort of return is exactly what Leeds need right now."

Gary Hutchinson

“Yes, absolutely.

“Roofe is a good forward, but in the Championship Gayle is guaranteed goals.

“I think they could both play, Roofe coming from deeper with Gayle ahead.

“Leeds don’t need a physical presence up top as some do, it might be a deadly duo with ‘Premier League’ written all over it.”
