Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to pick up much-needed points in the battle to survive in the Championship when they take on Rotherham United at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.

The Owls threw away a two-goal lead against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road at the weekend, as the Hatters went on to win 3-2, much to the frustration of the club's supporters.

That defeat for Sheffield Wednesday means that they're sat 23rd in the second-tier standings, and six points adrift of safety heading into their final 14 matches of this year's campaign.

The club have recently appointed Darren Moore as their new manager, with the former West Brom boss stepping aside from the managerial post at League One side Doncaster Rovers.

He'll be looking to get off to the perfect start on Wednesday, when they take on Rotherham United, who are sat one place above the Owls in the Championship table.

The Millers were beaten 1-0 by promotion-chasing Reading in their last match, and will be eager to pick up points themselves in the battle to retain their status as a club in the second-tier.

Sky Sports' EFL pundit David Prutton felt as though Sheffield Wednesday will run out narrow 1-0 winners on the night, and labelled it as a 'huge game' for the relegation-threatened teams.

"Sheffield Wednesday acted quickly to swoop for Darren Moore as they decided something needed to be done after four straight defeats, particularly as well in the way they collapsed against Luton on Saturday.

"This is a huge, huge game near the bottom. Rotherham are in no kind of form at all, and a draw doesn't really help either side. It will be nervy, but I think a mixture of new manager bounce and quality up top will see Wednesday through. Just."

The Verdict:

This is one of the most important matches in the battle to survive in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday haven't been anywhere near good enough this season, and I'm not surprised to see the Owls struggling in the second-tier.

It was vital that they appointed a permanent manager, otherwise I really did fear for their survival chances this term. Darren Moore has impressed me whilst in charge of Doncaster Rovers, and I think he's the manager the Owls needed to guide them clear of the relegation zone.

I can see them picking up three points against a Rotherham United side that have struggled in recent weeks.
